Maho no Kasa (The Magic Umberella) Story: Rose Fyleman ; Adaptation: Eileen Colwell Translation: Kyoko Matsuoka , Naomi Asagi pictures by John Shelley (Fukuinkan Shoten, Tokyo 1999) |
Rose Fyleman's original story was first published in the 1920's, and the illustrations to this Japanese translation of Eileen Colwell's version needed to retain this setting. Following the text of the English version I placed the scene in a Northern English market town. The mishaps of the simple farmer's wife when she unbeknowingly gains possession of a magic umberella are full of slapstick humour which I tried to make the most of. |
